Understanding the Election
The way American presidential elections are now determined, a close election will be decided by one important group: independent voters in a few swing states including Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Florida--and possibly Colorado and/or Iowa. If the election isn't close, if one candidate wins a landslide, the reason will be independent voters nationally. The electorate is split into three major groups (Democrats, Republicans and independents), and whoever wins two of these wins the election. To understand the election, keep an eye on independent voters.

The credit rating agencies that downgraded the U.S. credit rating in 2011 are still very closely watching the U.S. economy and some indications are that further downgrades could be ahead if the economy continues to struggle. Along with this, for the first time in many decades, U.S. securities are less stable than some other investments, and money flow away from the U.S. is increasing--especially since the middle of 2011. If these trends continue, U.S. economic challenges could drastically worsen in the next twenty months.
Needed: More Listening
The American founding generation was known for how strongly its members took sides and promoted their views, but also for its openness in listening to other views, learning from contrary perspectives, and changing its mind when the ideas of opponents made sense. In our time, this kind of listening to the other side is practically nonexistent. We won't often admit it, but we seem to want extreme politics. We say we don't like extremes and that we'd prefer respectful, mature, intelligent, restrained, civil, reasonable, prudent, sagacious and hopefully noble candidates. But the majority doesn't vote this way. Attack ads do work--over and over, in local, state and national elections. Refusing to attack one's opponent, to take the high road and stick to the issues, is a recipe for losing. There is a bona fide disconnect between what we say we want from our politics and how we actually vote. Too often we want our candidate to point out the flaws, weaknesses and misguided views of the opponent. The more extreme and angry the language, the more we support a candidate. We seem to want a fight, and we want our candidate to bloody the opponent. Libertarians and independents are as guilty of this as liberals and conservatives. Each group claims to want respectful and civil discourse, but a majority of each group votes for the outspoken, loud and aggressive.

Revolutionize Your L.I.F.E. !
Everyone will be called upon to lead at some point (and truly several points) in their lives, the only question is: Will they be ready?
The LIFE business launched with the purpose of providing world-class leadership materials to business executives, entrepreneurs, corporate climbers, pastors, church leaders, administrators, community service leaders, public servants, teachers, parents, and anybody who will find themselves in a position to lead. When it gets right down to it, leadership is for everyone. Nobody will be able to make their way through life without needing to draw upon the toolbox of leadership. Sadly, many people lack these tools and therefore get to live with the consequences of being ill-equipped. These consequences include missed opportunities, unfulfilled career aspirations, financial woes, and broken relationships.
Although leadership is for everyone, not everyone will equip themselves. Therefore, it may be helpful to consider a list of people for which the LIFE materials don't apply. LIFE leadership training materials are NOT for those who:
- Refuse to take 100% personal responsibility for their results in life.
- Would rather fix blame than fix problems.
- Want an easy, comfortable life without having to earn it.
- Already know everything and are therefore unteachable.
- Have character issues they refuse to address.
LIFE is for those who earnestly seek a better life, are interested in the strenuous process of personal growth, are driven to succeed in significant ways, and are committed to a life of excellence for a higher purpose.
Mediocrity is for the many.
Leadership is for the few.
Everyone will be called upon to lead - few will be ready.

Life Lessons by Chris Brady
I like lists. In my journal are several pages for listing things such as trips I've taken, books I've read, and quotes I like. One such list contains an eclectic collection entitled "Life Lessons." This consists of things I've learned through experience that could possibly have saved me from the experience in the first place! Occasionally, I'll dust off this list and read through it, finding that these lessons learned often need to be re-learned. At any rate, they keep me sharp and spur introspection. One that struck me this morning is:
"The time is going to pass and be gone. You can't do it all. Sooner or later you have to figure out what you can't imagine notaccomplishing and give everything you've got toward doing it. Learn to say NO to everything else."
Good advice?

| Our current lack of political civility is a lot like the medieval division between theology (what one believes) and religion (how one behaves). In the long run, our national behavior is a more accurate measure of what we truly believe than our words. As a nation, we claim to desire wisdom and civility in our public arena, but our votes say something different. When President Obama is moderate, measured and judicious, conservatives label him as lacking leadership and liberals call him ineffective, uncommitted and disappointing. When he pushes back, takes strong positions and goes on the attack, conservatives call him a terrible leader and a dangerous opponent, and progressives flock to support his revitalized presidency. We respond to aggression, not to wisdom or civility. Likewise, the liberal media once routinely praised Senator John McCain for his "fair, balanced and moderate" approach to the issues, until he became the Republican candidate for president and the media turned on him as an "extreme conservative." At the same time, conservatives supported his Senatorial leadership but then angrily labeled him "a liberal in conservative clothing" during his presidential bid. There are many similar examples. The old Greek proverb that "God loves the good but blesses the bold" is a good description of how our modern voters seem to think. All of this obscures the problems of a nation literally on the brink in far too many ways. Unemployment remains painfully high, and even small decreases in the unemployment rate are the result of more people giving up their search for work rather than more real jobs in the economy. Consider these sobering realities:
Things are worse than the numbers reflect, and currently they are not getting better. No wonder people are angry, and no wonder they want their candidates to speak strongly and carry a big stick. They want to vote for someone who will shake the system. Still, we are losing a vital part of free society: civility in the national dialogue. |
