Understanding the Election

The way American presidential elections are now determined, a close election will be decided by one important group: independent voters in a few swing states including Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Florida--and possibly Colorado and/or Iowa. If the election isn't close, if one candidate wins a landslide, the reason will be independent voters nationally. The electorate is split into three major groups (Democrats, Republicans and independents), and whoever wins two of these wins the election. To understand the election, keep an eye on independent voters.

Our Problematic New Grand Strategy by Oliver DeMille

The power of a Grand Strategy can hardly be overstated. When a nation adopts a Grand Strategy, it dominates national policy and influences all national choices over time. Few, if any, policies go against or are even allowed to compete with the accepted Grand Strategy. And while not everyone knows what a Grand Strategy is, the intelligentsia of both parties tends to follow the Grand Strategy with the energy and passion of religious doctrine. They may disagree on many things, but they both adhere to the Grand Strategy. So what is the new Grand Strategy of the United States? The answers are outlined in an article by Zbigniew Brzezinski: "A New U.S. Grand Strategy: Balancing the East, Upgrading the West". Things have changed drastically over the past decade, Brzezinski assures us, and by 2012 a new Grand Strategy is overdue. The outlines of this new plan include the following: The "central focus" for the United States in the years ahead is threefold: (1) revitalize the U.S., (2) help the West expand, and (3) create a balance in the East that will allow China to successfully rise without becoming an enemy. The expansion of the West will create a democratic free zone from North America and Western Europe to a number of other nations, including Eastern Europe, Russian, Turkey, Japan and South Korea. In the East, U.S. power and influence will attempt to create a cooperative relationship between China and Japan and keep Chinese-Indian relations from turning to violent conflict. To accomplish all this, the U.S. must become a better "promoter and guarantor" of unity and simultaneously a "balancer and conciliator between the major powers of the East." To have any credibility in these roles, the U.S. must effectively "renovate itself at home." This requires, says Brzezinski, four things: (1) better innovation, (2) improved education, (3) a balance of American power and diplomacy, and (4) a better focus on quality political leadership in Washington. One of the most important changes ahead must be an effective improvement of relations between the United States and the European Union. The two sides of the Atlantic have been drifting apart since the fall of the Berlin Wall, but this trend must be reversed. Otherwise, growing conflicts between the United States, the European Union, and Russia could weaken the West and cause it to splinter and become increasingly pessimistic. This would also promote a more contentious China. The U.S. should decrease military power in Asia and emphasize increased cooperation with China. Taiwan will at some point have to reconcile in some way with China. Unfortunately, there are a number of problems with this new strategy. If this is the outline of the years ahead, the U.S. will definitely face an era of deepening international confusion and tension.

The credit rating agencies that downgraded the U.S. credit rating in 2011 are still very closely watching the U.S. economy and some indications are that further downgrades could be ahead if the economy continues to struggle. Along with this, for the first time in many decades, U.S. securities are less stable than some other investments, and money flow away from the U.S. is increasing--especially since the middle of 2011. If these trends continue, U.S. economic challenges could drastically worsen in the next twenty months.

Needed: More Listening

The American founding generation was known for how strongly its members took sides and promoted their views, but also for its openness in listening to other views, learning from contrary perspectives, and changing its mind when the ideas of opponents made sense. In our time, this kind of listening to the other side is practically nonexistent. We won't often admit it, but we seem to want extreme politics. We say we don't like extremes and that we'd prefer respectful, mature, intelligent, restrained, civil, reasonable, prudent, sagacious and hopefully noble candidates. But the majority doesn't vote this way. Attack ads do work--over and over, in local, state and national elections. Refusing to attack one's opponent, to take the high road and stick to the issues, is a recipe for losing. There is a bona fide disconnect between what we say we want from our politics and how we actually vote. Too often we want our candidate to point out the flaws, weaknesses and misguided views of the opponent. The more extreme and angry the language, the more we support a candidate. We seem to want a fight, and we want our candidate to bloody the opponent. Libertarians and independents are as guilty of this as liberals and conservatives. Each group claims to want respectful and civil discourse, but a majority of each group votes for the outspoken, loud and aggressive.

Revolutionize Your Life! 

 Everyone will be called upon to lead at some point (and truly several points) in their lives, the only question is: Will they be ready?

• Earned 2002 Rookie of the Year title and set the rookie record for poles (6) and for top-10 finishes (22). Became only the second driver to win the prestigious All-Star Race in his rookie season.
• Led the Sprint Cup Series in poles in 2002 (6), 2003 (11), 2004 (9), 2005 (8) and 2011 (tied with five drivers with 3 poles).
• Won at least one Cup pole in 11 consecutive seasons.

Life Lessons by Chris Brady

I like lists. In my journal are several pages for listing things such as trips I've taken, books I've read, and quotes I like. One such list contains an eclectic collection entitled "Life Lessons." This consists of things I've learned through experience that could possibly have saved me from the experience in the first place! Occasionally, I'll dust off this list and read through it, finding that these lessons learned often need to be re-learned. At any rate, they keep me sharp and spur introspection. One that struck me this morning is:

"The time is going to pass and be gone. You can't do it all. Sooner or later you have to figure out what you can't imagine notaccomplishing and give everything you've got toward doing it. Learn to say NO to everything else."

Good advice?

More Civility

Our current lack of political civility is a lot like the medieval division between theology (what one believes) and religion (how one behaves). In the long run, our national behavior is a more accurate measure of what we truly believe than our words. As a nation, we claim to desire wisdom and civility in our public arena, but our votes say something different. When President Obama is moderate, measured and judicious, conservatives label him as lacking leadership and liberals call him ineffective, uncommitted and disappointing. When he pushes back, takes strong positions and goes on the attack, conservatives call him a terrible leader and a dangerous opponent, and progressives flock to support his revitalized presidency. We respond to aggression, not to wisdom or civility. Likewise, the liberal media once routinely praised Senator John McCain for his "fair, balanced and moderate" approach to the issues, until he became the Republican candidate for president and the media turned on him as an "extreme conservative." At the same time, conservatives supported his Senatorial leadership but then angrily labeled him "a liberal in conservative clothing" during his presidential bid. There are many similar examples. The old Greek proverb that "God loves the good but blesses the bold" is a good description of how our modern voters seem to think. All of this obscures the problems of a nation literally on the brink in far too many ways. Unemployment remains painfully high, and even small decreases in the unemployment rate are the result of more people giving up their search for work rather than more real jobs in the economy. Consider these sobering realities: Of those who have lost and then found new jobs since the Great Recession, only 7% have found a job that pays as much as the one they lost. When those not seeking jobs or only finding part-time work are included in the statistics, our real unemployment rate is nearly 20%. An amazing 44% of Americans receive food stamps or some other form of government food assistance. Since 2008, the average U.S. household has seen its net worth decrease 9.9%. In contrast, the increase of net worth for those serving in Congress since 2008 is 24%. In 2008, 9% of Americans and 16% of Chinese struggled "to pay for food." By 2011, 19% of Americans and 6% of Chinese struggle to pay for food. Things are worse than the numbers reflect, and currently they are not getting better. No wonder people are angry, and no wonder they want their candidates to speak strongly and carry a big stick. They want to vote for someone who will shake the system. Still, we are losing a vital part of free society: civility in the national dialogue.
